Company history

Sambonet of Italy Flatware was born in the latter 1700’s, originally being founded by a nobleman by the name of Giuseppe Sambonet. Sambonet possessed great abilities and skills in the fields of both goldsmithing and silversmithing. He was entrusted with the responsibility of restoring precious pieces and/or sacred objects for the Duomo of Vercelli. The Guiseppe Sambonet Company was founded in 1856 by his son of the same name.

He had been officially named “Master in Goldsmithing” and when he registered his company name, he did so using the letters “GS” which was his personal guarantee that you were purchasing a quality product. Over the years, Sambonet of Italy Flatware would continue refining its product quality to the extent that their products were deemed “official supplier” of numerous families of the Italian nobility. The count of Turin and the Duchess of Genova were just two of the more famous nobility using Sambonet’s quality products.

The production of Sambonet of Italy Flatware expanded from the standard sterling silver composition to silver plated nickel/silver mix in 1932. Six years later, they introduced their stainless steel flatware and was the first company of its type to employ the use of this material and cemented themselves as a leader in the industry. By employing in house technology, the company launched its latest two offerings orfevre blades and stainless steel knives in 1947, strengthening their position as the industry leader once again.

Sambonet of Italy Flatware also earned a position as the flatware of choice at the Cairo Hilton Hotel in 1958 when they introduced another product line that would achieve immediate success in the market, specifically their new hollowware product line. Hence the beginning of Sambonet being a supplier to the world’s major hotels. Interestingly enough, several pieces of the hollowware line that was introduced that year have found a permanent resting place on display in the Museum of Modern Art located in New York City. Today, the Sambonet name is recognized worldwide.
