The best voice over actors make their job look simple - so simple that any person chosen off the street could perform it. This is absolutely not the case. If you wish to embark on a professional career as a voice over actor, there are many steps one must first take.
Here is what you should do.
1. Take Acting Classes. If you live in an urban area, it should be simple to find a suitable acting class. Find a course and enroll in it. Why acting classes? You will need the ability to create characters who "perform" within a commercial spot. Simply taking an voice class will not give you the background you will need. You will need to learn this skill set from the very beginning. At the entry level of your voice over career it is not yet about your voice - it is about the objective of your character within the script.
2. Take a Voice Over Class.Take Voice Over Instruction. After you've opened yourself up for three or four months in an acting class, time to move into specifics with a voice over class. Check online within your city and you should be able to find a few options and courses to choose from.
3. Begin a Disciplined Rehearsal Timetable. In addition to class, listen to any and every commercial on the TV and radio. Listen to them and copy them. Read magizines aloud as if you were reading ad copy for a commercial assignment. Become used to talking so that silence feels awkward to you.
4. Find Your Niche Once you are in total control of your voice as an instrument you will need to become comfortable within your range. This will guide you toward your specific market. Are you the classy BMW voice, the GenX hamburger guy, the Don Pardo game show host? The more characters you can communicate as, the more marketable you will become. Knowing all that you can do will help you with confidence and direction when promoting yourself.
So, start studying, keep practicing, establish where your voice would fit in best - and begin a successful livelihood as a voice actor.
