For those who don t know yet, the Book of Mormon was first published in 1830 by a certain Joseph Smith Jr., who claimed to have found gold plates that he discovered buried (in 1823) near his home at Manchester NY. Joseph also stated that a divine being literally guided him to the plates. The plates were encrypted in something similar to ancient Egyptian, which took Joseph the good part of seven years to decipher. The book speaks of the story of Adam and Eve, and also the last days, very much like the Bible does. However, as we will see there are also striking differences between classic Christianity and Mormonism.

This publication led to the establishment of the Church of the Latter Day Saints, and its members are referred to as Mormons or Latter Day Saints. As with any new doctrine, Mormonism was, and still is, often frowned upon by the classic believers and some even refer to Mormonism as evil. On the other hand, the Mormons claim that they do not preach anything out of context as far as the Bible goes, and are themselves said believers of the Bible as well. The book of Mormon, they claim compliments the Bible and not oppose it.

The Church of Latter Day Saints having been initiated in America, Mormonism obviously has a faithful following in the country more than any other country to date, in fact. However, the religion has spread far and wide, thanks to the undying (and often frowned upon) efforts of Mormon missionaries . Mormonism is propagated more through word of mouth than any other methodical approach, and their seemingly hush hush meets sometimes leads to the belief that Mormonism is a cult, or more of a fraternity than a true religion.

The most striking difference between classic Christianity and Mormonism is probably the difference in opinion on God. Mormons believe in different forms of the Supreme Being, even a man who attained enlightenment and practiced to perfection before being escalated into a state of godliness.

They believe in a God who has flesh and blood, and even a wife...The bible on the other hand clearly speaks of ONE Supreme Being, the creator of the universe and all things in it. Another touchy aspect of the Mormon Christian arguments is the Mormon belief that the Bible probably has more than a few errors, and the ONE sacred and untouched text is the Book of Mormon. In answer, Christians believe that it is blasphemy to suggest such a thing!

One of the witnesses to the book of Mormon who was David Witmer claims that the idea to create a new priesthood was actually given up by one of the other followers. This new priesthood idea didn t come into line until after the church had been in operation for two years. At that time 2000 followers had already been baptized into the church and not by what they would recognize as their priest.

David Witmer confronts Joseph Smith saying that Joseph actually changed the revelations only to support the error of the president of their organization themselves. Further to this it has been repeatedly pointed out that when Joseph was picking and choosing what suited him from the Holy Bible that he neglected to take a close look at Hebrews. This is where it distinctly tells one that God sent his son who is the one and only eternal high priest. It is obvious but that Joseph Smith pays no credence to what does not benefit him.
