Those visitors and residents coming from Western Europe, from countries like the Republic of Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales, are bound to be delighted to find that Thailand has many traditional style pubs. Bangkok, being the capital city of Thailand, probably has more than anywhere else, but Pattaya must be coming up as a close second.
Pubs in Western Europe are traditional places, often where men go alone to enjoy a quiet pint of their favourite beer, drawn up from the cellar, to pumps at the bar. This is the beer which is most favoured and it is termed ‘draught’ beer. Although cans are often available, it is generally ladies who enjoy half pints of lighter beers, often mixed with lemonade to lighten the beer.
Die hard beer drinkers will be thrilled to learn that in many pubs, particularly in Bangkok and Pattaya, it is possible to get your favourite beer on tap. There are many excellent Irish pubs for example, serving the traditional Guinness, along with traditionally Irish food, such as a good Irish ‘fry’ for breakfast, including black pudding (a sausage made with dried pig’s blood).
The décor in pubs (Public Houses) such as these is usually mainly memorabilia from whichever part of the world the owner hails. Hence with Irish pubs there will be a plethora of ancient street signs, maps of villages, old photographs in frames, all kinds of brewing memorabilia, including the infamous Guinness toucan and generally anything which evokes memories of Ireland.
These types of traditional pubs tend to offer their clients home away from home, with the added bonus of having pleasant smiling and very attentive staff just waiting to give you everything you need, and then some.
Very often the food offered is in keeping with the type of pub, and thus Irish pubs serve Irish ‘pub grub’, whereas a traditional Scottish pub will serve traditional Scottish fare, such as scotch eggs, fish and chips, along with the full selection of local dishes.
The music offered at these venues is also tied into the theme of the pub, so Irish music would be prevalent in Irish pubs. The fitting out of the pubs is also traditional, featuring a long bar, at which are many stools, along with more private booths, usually around the perimeter of the room. Flooring tends to be bare boards, which are easier to clean, and more traditional.
The general atmosphere in all these pubs, no matter if English, Irish or Scottish, is one of relaxed enjoyment. There is usually the regular mix of lone drinkers, sipping their pints at the bar, along with groups of men tucking into a late full breakfast of bacon, sausages, eggs, friend potatoes, toast, mushrooms, tomatoes and black pudding.
So if you are planning a trip to Thailand, and are worried about leaving your local behind, there is no need. Most of the big cities, and certainly Bangkok and Pattaya, have more than their fair share of very good pubs for you to enjoy during your visit to the Land of Smiles.
